Whether you are a frequent flyer or a newcomer to travel – a travel checklist is always recommended. What to pack, how to pack, what to bring, and what to leave at home – here we show you what has to go with, and what you should definitely think about. You know – vaccinations, visas, and the validity of your passport: important, but boring enough to forget.

So if you’re going to travel soon, check out our ultimate checklist. You will not regret it.

1. Book in time

Do not book your hotel room last minute – your chances are not good. Saving money with a last-minute booking is pretty unlikely, and once you get to your destination, you probably don’t want to have to wander the streets looking for a hotel. Booking in time is a good idea. The same applies to flights, book your ticket 53 days before departure for the lowest price!

2. Be flexible

Think about booking a cancelable airline ticket and hotel room. This means the costs are a bit higher in advance, but they could save you some money in the end.

3. Will they let you in?

Find out whether you need a visa – also for transit countries – and how long it takes to get it. If you already have one, make sure it is valid for the entire stay.

4. How long is your pass valid for?

Is your passport still valid?

Make sure your passport is valid for the length of your trip: some countries won’t let you in otherwise. Check the country’s entry requirements before you leave. Many countries require that the passport be valid for a certain period after entering or leaving the country.

5. Roll up your sleeves

Vaccinations! Nobody can stand them, but they are better than the alternative. Make sure you get all the recommended prescribed medications and vaccinations, and that your existing ones are still effective. If possible, go to your family doctor eight weeks before the start of your trip. Some vaccinations need to be done well in advance for your body to build immunity.

6. Plan your departure

Some countries will not let you enter if you have not booked a return flight – read the rules for your destination country again before you leave and have a copy of your ticket in your hand luggage.

7. Date expired?

If you have discount cards in your luggage, for example, a student ID, make sure that they are still valid.

8. Distribute your cash

If you’re traveling with cash, don’t keep everything in the same bag. This way, you are protected in the event that one piece of luggage is lost.

9. Copy your documents

Copy and scan important documents – passport, tickets, booking confirmations, etc. Give one copy to a responsible person (for example, a family member) and keep the other.

10. Send yourself an email

Send yourself an email that contains all travel details, such as passport number, flight, and telephone number. If you lose your wallet and cell phone, you will be happy about it.
